Alexander Stravoudas is an architect on the brink of making it big. His business is successful, he's got money to burn, a posh lifestyle, and a beautiful fiancee. He's tall, has long blond hair, and is in good shape...you know the type. He's got it all. Everything is perfect.
Until his fiancee dumps him. He's got a the biggest business deal he's ever had at stake because this emir, with whom he is dealing, wants to deal with a man who is attached to a woman. Alex is angry and goes to the source of his breakup, the woman who'd done the deed of giving him back his ring, Sophia Feuer.
Sophie has her own bakery and works hard at it. She'd moved it into a new building after outgrowing her apartment only to find out later that Alex owns the building and it isn't zoned for a business like hers. She is surprised when he shows up at the back door of the bakery, demanding that she play the part of his fiancee for the next three months. If she didn't do it, he was going to the zoning board and she would lose her business.
There were times when I wanted to punch Sophie in the face. I don't know who died and left her in charge. Who was she to decide the fate of others? It was almost like she was a bad version of Ann Landers or something. She was behind the breakup of Alex and Melanie, the latter of who is one of Sophie's best friends. I thought that gave the story a weird twist but whatever.
Sophia has no choice but to play along with the charade. She hates him and he hates her. They are constantly coming at each other with snide remarks and jibes. Sometimes it's comical. Sometimes it hurts. But they have no choice. They are bound by a contract. They have to see this through.
When they go to Paris, Sophie begins to realize that Alexander is under an incredible amount of pressure and it's not all just from business. He's got something driving him to be perfect and it's not necessarily a good thing. He's got some vulnerabilities that she didn't see at first
She's got a hang-up of her own that prevents her from giving herself to him. Which one will win at the end?
This book was a page-turner with a tight plot, fantastic descriptions of characters and places that they visit, and a great ending. I didn't like Sophia at first because I thought she overstepped her boundaries and toward the end, I didn't like her because she overstepped her boundaries again but it was different that time. Everything was different.
This gets an easy five stars.

I am an unabashed lover of romance. I want the H to strong and determined, yet one who can become a marshmallow for the right woman. I want the h to be equally strong and determined, yet willing to acquiesce when love is real. I want there to be subplots that help create tension and, once solved, add depth to the story.
Caro LaFever delivers on all counts. This is a book that I found almost impossible to put down (but then, preparing a meal can become important if only to stop one’s tummy from rumbling). I found Alex to be maddeningly arrogant, and ultimately, swoon worthy. His character is appreciably multi-faceted so that he doesn’t appear to be impossibly perfect. His flaws (which I won’t divulge here so as to not give away too much of the story) add spice to the story. I loved that Sophie is not the drop-dead gorgeous tall, svelte model-type of woman found in many romance novels. She's real! She's not pleased with how she looks (and many of us can identity with that, even when we're told we look great), and she has her own share of angst.
Of course, HEA is important to romance novels, and this one has it ... beautifully. The epilogue is delightful and left me with a big grin.
Caro LaFever has joined my “Favorite Authors” list and I look forward to reading more from this talented fellow Coloradan. I received this book for free and am honored to be able to provide this review.
Would definitely read more of her books. I had so much fun reading this one. It had me laughing hard and with tears in my eyes.
I really loved this book the inter action between them was fun and sometimes confusing and hot but not dull at all😊
My first read from author, will definitely read more...the storyline kept me interested till the end..
I like stories where one of the main characters need to realize their dreams and find love in a person who is the opposite in personality or just as strong. especially when you have to look underneath the outer layer of the characters
I think this one is my favorite. It’s longer than the others and just…bigger. Sophie is so wonderful. She’s sassy and smart, she isn’t intimidated by Alex at all. Alex comes off as this charming, suave guy, but inside he’s not perfect. He’s got some deep scars that only Sophie can heal. And wow! I got to go to a ball in New York City and then off to Paris for Christmas. Can’t get much better than that.
